Born in 1935, Cotton didn’t just bridge eras – he helped shape them. Having dragged himself up from the dirt, he as different to most artists, equally at ease rubbing shoulders with gangsters and thugs as he was tearing the house down from the stage. Another thing he delighted in was menacing his fellow performers, trying to sap their confidence before they were due to step out.
Hs 70-year career saw Cotton tour with Janis Joplin and Paul Butterfield, and play sessions with the Rolling Stones, Grateful Dead, Led Zeppelin, Santana, Steve Miller and B.B. King, but he never truly got the recognition that his influence, persona, talent and longevity warranted.
Directed by Bestor Cram, whose work includes Johnny Cash at Folsom Prison, Bonnie Blue weaves rarely seen archival footage, stills and anecdotes through an intimate concert held in Cotton’s honor, featuring Steve Miller, James Montgomery, Annie Raines, Buddy Guy and many more.
